What is an Orangery Extension?

An Orangery is a brick-based structure with large glass windows and a large glass lantern in the roof to maximise the light.

Orangeries started to gain popularity in Northern Europe in the 17th century, when wealthy properties began to feature buildings with large windows that enabled citrus fruits (hence the name ‘Orangery’) and other exotic plants to grow, protected throughout colder months.

A great place to see some of these traditional Orangeries is to visit one of the many National Trust Gardens with one. The National Trust is the largest single owner of orangeries in the UK, owning 28 historic Orangeries.

What is the difference between a Conservatory and an Orangery Extension?

While they are very similar and often referred to interchangeably, there are some key differences between an Orangery and a Conservatory.

Orangeries are brick-based structures with large windows and a glass lantern roof whereas Conservatories are made entirely of glass. Orangeries tend to blend more seamlessly into the building they extend from because of their brickwork. Orangeries are often referred to as Orangery Conservatories as well, which can add to the confusion

Do I need planning permission for an Orangery Extension?

Orangery Extensions do not necessarily require planning permission, providing that you stay within certain size and materials parameters.

Some of the requirements and limitations on building an Orangery Extension include:

  • Rear extensions must be no more than 8m in depth on a detached house, or 6m in depth for a semi-detached or terrace property
  • Materials and style should be similar to the original structure
  • The extension cannot sit forward of the principal elevation
  • Where the extension is within 2m of any boundary, the eaves cannot be higher than 3m, and no more than 4m in height otherwise
  • For side extensions, the width of the extension must not be greater than half the width of the original building

The Brightbuild Solutions team will always be familiar with up-to-date planning permission restrictions and building regulations, so the best thing to do is to get in touch for a chat if you are having any doubts. You may also want to contact your Local Planning Authority (LPA).
